THE FERTILITY OASIS: Redefining the IVF Experience

Design Research / Spatial Design
2022
This project looks into the exclusive industry of in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) and fertility treatments, aiming to reimagine the experience of IVF outside of the conventional and highly medicalised spaces.
Focussing on understanding all facets of IVF within the context of Madrid, an exploratory research methodology was used to create a research archive comprising of case studies, spaces, services, and stakeholders involved in the industry.
After mapping out the industry's intricate ecosystem, Clinica Tambre was identified as a prominent IVF clinic in Madrid. Keeping this in mind, the design aims to propose a novel spatial experience for the clinic and its clientele. A solution that not only enhances access to IVF but also supports holistic fertility by incorporating lifestyle elements such as specialised diets, relaxation techniques, gentle stress-reducing exercises, and more. IVF can be a stressful process, often with initial unsuccessful attempts, addressing controllable factors like stress levels and lifestyle could potentially improve the success rates of the cycles.
The new design proposal alters a few of the interior and exterior spaces of the existing clinic, with the addition of a gym and biophilia wall, leaving the medicalised spaces as is. A new structure added on top of the building houses rooms for clients to stay during their treatments, with an added swimming pool and greenhouse area. By implementing these enhancements, the proposal aims to cultivate a more supportive and effective environment within the clinic for individuals undergoing fertility treatments.
